Attractions in Dooars


The Dooars or Duars are the alluvial floodplains in eastern-northeastern India that lie south of the outer foothills of the Himalayas and north of the Brahmaputra River basin.

Gorumara National Park

Gorumara National Park is an important national park of North Bengal. It is situated just at the foot hills of Eastern Himalaya in Terai region, on the flood plains in Murti, Raidak. Jaldhaka a tributary of Brahmaputra flows just beside the National Park. Gorumara has mixed vegetation of forest and grassland. Located on the northern side of West Bengal, Gorumara National Park is home to a large number of India rhinoceros. It serves as one of the best places to explore for both animal and nature lovers. This is due to the fact that it resides on the foothills of Himalayas and is surrounded by green vistas to sooth your eyes. If you have been in search of such a destination then do not look beyond West Bengal’s Gorumara National Park. Gorumara National Park experiences tropical climate throughout the year, with temperature ranging from 23 degrees in summer to 10 degrees in winter. June to September mark the rainy season here and the place receives moderate to heavy rainfall during that season. Humidity increases during monsoon.

Rocky Island

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is habitats of the rare one-horned rhinoceros, the mighty bison, leopard, spotted deer, sambar, hog deer, reptiles, huge wild tuskers, wild boars, and the rarest variety of birds, including peacocks. Elephant riding through the Jaldapara forest in search of wild animals, particularly the one-horned rhinos, is specially popular among tourists. Buxa Tiger Reserve

Buxa Tiger Reserve is a Tiger reserve and National park in northern West Bengal, India, covering an area of 760 km². In altitude, it ranges from 60 m in the Gangetic Plains to 1,750 m bordering the Himalayas in the north. At least 284 bird species inhabit the reserve. Nestled in the foothills of Himalayas close to Bhutan and Assam border is a nature endowed place, Buxa Tiger Reserve. Located at a distance of 19km from Alipurduar before being entitled as the 15th tiger reserve of India in 1983, Buxa Tiger Reserve was known for the dolomite mining. Surrounded by the lofty hills of Bhutan, Buxa Tiger Reserve is the largest forest in North Bengal and has the second highest population of Royal Bengal Tiger in West Bengal after Sunderbans. Murti

Murti is a picturesque tourist spot located on the banks of the Murti River in the Dooars region of Northern Bengal. Chapramari

Chapramari is a forest in Dooars area of North Bengal. The forest is a continuation of the Gorumara forests. The two forests are separated by the Murti river which passes through the otherwise continuous forest. Whereas Gorumara is a National Park, Chapramari is only is a wildlife sanctuary. Sited at a distance of 72km from the bustling city Siliguri and 30km from Chalsa adjacent to Gorumara National Park is one of the oldest forest reserves of West Bengal called Chapramari. Crowned as a National Wildlife Sanctuary in 1998, Chapramari is practically the continuation of Gorumara National Park which is the home of famous Asiatic one-horned Rhino. Chapramari with its vast collection of wildlife species and verdant forest has hyped the interest of tourist who wants to explore the wild side of Dooars region. Chapramari watchtower is considered to be the prime attraction of Chapramari. The name Chapramari probably derives from "Chopra" which means a type of fish and "Mari" which means abundant.
